Why Do Creationists See the "Dumbing Down" of America as Proof of God's Plan?
Because of the Fall, duh--we're all decaying!

Recently, the Sensuous Curmudgeon ran a post on a piece written by the Institute for Creation Research. The post talked about declining IQ scores.

I'd like to share just one quote really quickly, and then we'll talk about it:

Declining IQ scores, and the harmful mutations that likely cause them, powerfully confirm Scripture that teaches “the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”

This is, of course, a reference to Romans 8:21. Here it is, with a little context:

…20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now.…

We've been talking about Genesis recently, and I promise to pick back up on that on Wednesday, but  the idea behind the ICR quote is strongly rooted in the doctrine of the Fall and Original Sin.

Original sin, of course, was Adam eating the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. This was after Eve was deceived, taking the fruit herself and then offering it to him.

Prior to this event, the Garden was the perfect world order. There was no death, no strife, no pain or suffering. There was no evil. And this was God's plan, of course, for the world.

After original sin, man had his sin nature (traditionally considered to be transmitted through the male line, at least in the sect I grew up in). This brought in death, pain, suffering, and a variety of other ills. This is the Fall, and it affected not only mankind, but also creation as a whole. It's the reason animals kill to eat.

The Fall also introduced decay into the world. From that point, the perfect world order was destroyed. Creation was doomed to decay. It's part of the reason that we have politicians that believe we should do nothing to stem climate change.

It also underscores the point above: Of course IQs are going down. DNA is mutating (which in this context, means accruing mutations that are detrimental, or decaying...) and that's all to be expected. Rather than looking at it logically, and maybe asking ourselves if this is a result of different testing methods or a cultural shift or whether IQ is even relevant in the slightest, this is chalked up as proof that the Fall is an active doctrine, and thus God exists. It serves to harken to the coming of the end of the world, because creation can only be allowed to decay so far.

This is yet more reason that the influence of religion in politics is so dangerous. No matter what point you make, it can be twisted to prove an apocalyptic worldview. The world is decaying...why should we try to change it?
